If you clean your own short-term rental, you already know the property better than anyone. You see what guests leave behind, you reset every room, and you can take your own photos or videos. That removes the need to monitor a separate cleaner. It does not remove the need for a consistent record or an independent second look.
The honest answer is that TurnAudit should not duplicate work you already do well. Its job is to turn that work into a repeatable pre-clean and post-clean record, keep the original walkthrough connected to the correct turnover, and help you review the property after you have spent hours focused on cleaning it.
Self-cleaning solves one problem, not every problem
A cleaner-managed host needs a documented record that a turnover happened and a clear handoff between guest, cleaner, and host. A self-cleaning host does not have that trust gap. You were there.
You still perform three different jobs during the same visit: document how the guest left the property, clean and reset it, then verify what the next guest will see. Familiarity helps with the second job. It can work against the third. After you have made the bed, restocked the bathroom, cleared the kitchen, and fixed small problems along the way, your brain is primed to see a finished turnover.
TurnAudit is not there to establish that you cleaned. It is there to give your future self a consistent record and your present self a second review pass.
Why camera-roll photos and videos are not the same system
Taking your own media is already better than keeping no record. The weakness is usually not the camera. It is the structure around the files.
- Timing: a photo taken after you started cleaning cannot show the original checkout condition.
- Coverage: people naturally photograph what looks important in the moment, so rooms and surfaces vary from stay to stay.
- Context: close photos can show a mark without showing where it is, while unrelated videos can be difficult to connect to one turnover.
- Comparison: inconsistent routes make it harder to compare the same room before and after cleaning or across several stays.
- Organization: camera-roll files sit beside personal media, screenshots, and unrelated property photos unless you rename, sort, and preserve them yourself.
TurnAudit requires live, room-by-room recording through its in-app camera. It does not accept arbitrary camera-roll uploads for baseline, pre-clean, or post-clean walkthroughs. That constraint is deliberate: each recording stays attached to the property, room, turnover, and phase in which it was captured.
What TurnAudit adds for a self-cleaning host
1. A record before you change the scene
The pre-clean walkthrough documents visible condition after checkout and before you move, wipe, remove, or repair anything. It helps separate normal turnover work from damage, missing items, maintenance, and guest belongings without assigning blame.
2. A separate post-clean checkpoint
The post-clean walkthrough forces a distinct final pass. You record the same rooms after the reset instead of relying on the feeling that the work is finished. That gives you something concrete to review before the next arrival.
3. An advisory second set of eyes
When you choose an AI review on an eligible plan, TurnAudit can surface possible damage, visible mess, missing items, or incomplete resets for you to inspect. The AI can miss issues and can flag things that are fine. A Pass means nothing was detected, not that nothing exists. You open the linked footage and decide.
4. A record tied to the turnover
For eligible uploaded originals, TurnAudit computes a SHA-256 fingerprint, requests an independent RFC-3161 timestamp, reports the finalization status, and keeps the original separate from advisory AI material. This does not guarantee any claim result. It gives you organized source material instead of asking you to reconstruct a stay from memory and loose files.
5. A workflow that can change with you
Cleaning mode is set per property. Choose Self-cleaning when the direct property host will record. If you later use a cleaner, switch that property to Cleaner-managed and assign the person who will capture the walkthroughs. Managers and other organization members cannot use the direct host's self-capture path.
Walkthroughs are video-only and do not capture audio. Record the property, not people. AI review is optional and separate from the documentation record, so a host can preserve a turnover without asking the AI to review it.
When you may not need TurnAudit
If you already record every room before and after every clean, follow the same route, preserve the originals, organize them by turnover, compare them reliably, and make time for a detached final review, you already have much of the process. TurnAudit's remaining value is convenience, integrity records, and optional advisory review. That may or may not justify another tool for your operation.
The product is a better fit when your current routine breaks under time pressure, your media is scattered, you have ever discovered a missed reset after leaving, or you want a consistent record before a dispute exists.
A practical self-cleaning routine
- Set the property to Self-cleaning. The direct host chooses the cleaning mode when adding or editing the property.
- Record a current guest-ready baseline. Use it as a visual reference for room setup and inventory.
- Start with the pre-clean walkthrough. Record before stripping beds, moving belongings, taking out trash, or starting repairs. Each room must be recorded for 15 to 45 seconds; aim for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Clean as usual. TurnAudit does not replace your checklist, judgment, or maintenance process.
- Record the post-clean walkthrough. Follow the same room order and treat it as a separate final inspection.
- Review the source footage. Check any advisory observations yourself and preserve or export records before their retention period ends.
The short answer
You do not need TurnAudit because someone else cleans your property. You may need it because cleaning, inspecting, and documenting are different jobs, even when one person does all three. Your photos and videos capture what you choose to record. A structured process makes the record repeatable, keeps it connected to the turnover, and gives you another chance to notice what familiarity and fatigue can hide.
AI observations in TurnAudit are advisory and may be incomplete or incorrect. TurnAudit is documentation software, not insurance, legal advice, or a guarantee of a property condition or claim result.
